Digital Footprints - Can send you to jail in Ethiopia

Digital footprint is the traces or footprints we leave on our behalf online through our email, Facebook, twitter, blogs, uploading videos or digital images or online forum registration. With time we might forget about posting information online but the information will be there for many years to come.

Recently, I have become very aware about my online activity could affect my future carrier and my security that I take great precaution what I post or what I said on different social media. I have seen on the news people got fired from their employment for what they wrote on Facebook or twitter, I have seen athletes lose their endorsement for what they wrote or said on the social media. I have also seen on the news teachers being lose their job because of the nude pictures posted online when they were young.

The other reason why I take great reservation from posting things online is the political situation in my country Ethiopia. The government in Ethiopia has spies in Europe and North-America to check on their diaspora what they post or said about the government treatment of its people or corruption. I know some Ethiopian  in Canada and the USA who are not allowed to enter Ethiopia to visit their family mainly due to their blogs and postings on social media.
For my students I will always remind them how their today digital footprint will affect their life in years to come. This an interesting video for students by Steve Johnson.

Have a good Day.
